Elaborately embellished Valentine’s Day cards, popular overseas and expensive to import, sprung to success in the United States thanks to a young woman and her assembly line process. In the 1800s, Esther Howland fell in love with Valentine’s Day cards and began making them by hand to distribute with the help of her friends. What started as a young girl’s fascination transformed into a successful commercial greeting card company in 1849.
